Innovation

While everyone agrees that being innovative is one of the biggest needs of today’s time and age, not everyone seems to think about it the same way. In fact, it is solely due to these misconceptions that people have about innovation that so many people actually never step out of their lane and try their hand at being innovative.

Let’s look at some of the top 5 mistakes people make when they think of innovation.

The Innovation Must Occur Within Our Comfort Zone

Being innovative means you will have to do something you haven’t done and most likely nobody else has either. In such situations, how can one expect innovation to occur within one’s comfort zone? This is one common mistake that people make when they confuse innovation with comfort.

Unrealistic Expectation about the Risk Factor

As we just said that innovation means stepping out of your comfort zone. We all know that outside out comfort zone the risk factor of things not going our way is way too high. This is because we have never been on the other side and we have no idea how things are going to go.

When you are being innovative, you are essentially experimenting with ideas hoping for some results. Nobody knows how those results are going to turn out to be. They can be in your favor, and they can be equally against it. Naturally, a little bit of fear is expected, but fearing the  unknown to such an extent where you never even attempt to do something is another major  mistake people make which keeps them from being innovative.

Coming Up with an Innovative Idea Requires a lot of Resources

Another common misconception that people have regarding innovation is that you need to have a lot of resources especially in terms of financial and technical support. While you may need to invest in your innovative idea and that investment would largely depend upon what exactly is your innovative idea, you only need your creativity and passion to come up with an innovative idea.

Innovation is a One Man Show

There are people who might come up with an innovative solution entirely on their own; it does not always have to be that way. You can be innovative in collaboration with other creative minds as well. In fact, several experts actually recommend having a creative network in place for this purpose only.

The reason why this works is because the more people you have on hand, the more variety you will have in terms of perspectives too. Four people looking at one thing will all be looking at it from their unique perspectives. The more the perspectives to learn from, the higher will be the chances of coming up with an innovative idea.

The Innovative Spirit Should be Free

A lot of people actually confuse the innovative spirit being “free” for “purposeless”.

Being free means letting your innovative spirit really explore the areas it wishes to explore and questions the things it comes across. This does not mean that all this exploration and questioning should be without a purpose!

Avoid these 5 mistakes next time you wish to come up with something innovative.

Good luck!

Innovation in education management can be achieved if teachers and educators are coached correctly and trained to use advanced methodologies

So you are looking around for ways to innovate teachers. You can definitely improve educational means, technologies and the manner in which lessons are planned. But what you should also do is focus on training the teachers themselves.

If the teachers become more innovative, and come up with new ways to explain the concepts, the quality of education will certainly improve at all levels right from the junior classes till college.

Asses the proficiency of teachers

The proficiency and performance of teachers should be assessed through well planned out metrics. Certain benchmarks should be determined, and if teachers fall below that level, they should be trained in that particular aspect.

Focus on both theory and practical sessions

Many teachers either focus on either theoretical knowledge or practical exams, whereas they should be focusing equally on both.  Education is a science and a craft. Thus, innovators in education management should not only be trained through a fixed course outline, but through a flexible model as well. Abstract teaching and experimental learning each play their own part, and so they should be incorporated in training. As an example, the initial few days can be focused on some coursework, whereas time in later stages can be spent in a classroom for a practical experience of the concepts learnt.

Provide continuous education

Even if teachers have acquired high qualifications and spent several years in the educational industry, they should be trained and coached continuously. As technology advances, so does education. And every teacher needs to be aware of the latest methodologies and practices, so that they can modify their styles accordingly. They should be provided regular access to quality coursework and professional development opportunities so that they are trained on all new forms of providing education.

Give them short term and long term goals

Your training session should not only be innovative, but should allow participants to leave it with a proper plan. Help them set short and long terms goals for themselves, and guide them on achieving their targets. Encourage teachers to think about each of the concepts taught and the manner in which they will apply it in the classroom.

Provide an active learning environment

Active learning is an effective form of training that allows concepts to be understood better and retained longer. Prepare real problem scenario questions so that teachers develop a gist of what they should do when caught up in some situation. Encourage question/answer sessions and group discussions as well, allowing everyone to learn from each other.

Encourage changes and adaption

Effective teaching is adaptive. Teachers must understand that even when training is over, they will still have to reflect back on their styles and make modifications where necessary. They should be able to assess the effectiveness of their teaching through course evaluations, class participation and students feedback, and use it for further improvements.

Modifications should not be limited to the teaching style, but should also be made to the content and structure of the course itself if required.

Innovation

Technology has come so far that it has affected all aspects of life, from business to entertainment to education. Nowadays, schools are reforming their teaching methodologies to keep abreast of the changing times. Children are using tablets and PCs rather than the traditional books more. This is not to say that traditional methods are on the way out; but simply means that that new technology is being incorporated in today’s learning environment.

Everyone is connected to each other in more ways than we could have ever imagined and information is just a quick Google search and click away. Distance learning has taken new shapes and forms thanks to the internet and people can learn anything and everything without having to wait for a scheduled time on TV for a distance learning class.

Here are just some of the technologies that are taking the education sector by storm:

  1. Cloud technology

There are times when a student can’t attend any classes due to various reasons such as, illness, injury, family issues or moving to another country where the education standard is not up to par etc. Then this situation calls cloud based learning system. It is basically a form of distance learning where all the learning material is stored in particular area and the student can access it whenever and wherever possible. These can include audio lectures, video lessons and also live class sessions.

  1. M-learning

There is the new trend called M-learning (mobile learning) where the students can use their mobile phones to learn. They can download audio/video podcasts, download learning apps, and watch videos from their mobile phones. It is ideal for students who are on the go and need to access learning material where they can’t use a laptop or PC.

  1. Virtual reality

This is the latest trend these days. It hasn’t been fully adapted in schools but some of them have started experimenting with this idea as it will slowly grow into a regular feature in a classroom. Virtual reality helps people interact with each other in a 3 dimensional environment. This can make people from all over the world seem like they are sitting together in a classroom.

  1. PCs and tablets

Schools are incorporating the use of tablets, laptops and PCs now more than ever because it’s easier to store and retrieve information.  It is easily accessible and shareable as well. The costs for using these technologies have reduced and it helps in reducing paper wastage like it did in the past.

  1. Social media
Everyone knows that kids and teens these days are heavily dependent on the use of social media to communicate with each other. It is also a way for them to express themselves whether in the form of videos through Snapchat or pictures in Instagram. So schools have started using social media to teach them such as making Facebook groups where teachers can share their lessons or have videos on Snapchat reminding them about their assignments etc.

Education, Innovation
Find out why the big thinkers can influence and help the educational sector.

Education is one of the biggest evolving industries for big thinkers. Wondering why? Let’s jump straight to it because the answer is simple: the big thinkers of today will influence the big thinkers of tomorrow. Here are some of the reasons:

Create problem solvers

There is a growing need of solutions to real world problems and many people in the educational sector don’t realize it. However, the earlier the children get exposed to scenarios where they need to use their critical skills in order to solve real world problems, the better they would become. Yes there might be a genius or 2 who will come up with a new way of farming vegetables in your backyard or reducing the carbon imprint, but that’s rare. The new era is coming up with multiple problems. Multiple problems need multiple solutions and multiple solutions are only generated when there are multiple people working together.

New ideas

The one key thing about every thought leader or big thinker is that their ideas are always unique that makes them stand apart from the rest. They use never old techniques and strategies in coming up with solutions. Big thinkers can come up with new ideas and propose them to the schools and universities so that the students view education as something instrumental in their lives.

Contributing to the world

Using the “pay it forward” strategy, the big thinkers can contribute to the education sector by helping them devise plans and methods to effectively teach in the classrooms. They can have a mentoring program for students that show interest and skills in a particular field. By doing so, they can hone their skills so that they become future leaders.

Teaching the teachers

Big thinkers and thought leaders can enlighten the teachers and the educator’s community to adopt new styles and teaching methodologies that can create a better learning experience for the students. Skilled teachers will result in better students.

Rethinking the value of education

Students these days think of education as 2 things:

  • The road to a big fat paycheck
  • An ocean of debt
Either way, it’s all about money. New programs that are competency based and not involve heavy student debts that scare off potential students into getting higher education should be introduced. Students should also be told that a diploma or degree is not the primary face of a good education. There are innovators and thought leaders who had no degrees but they have excelled in life by taking risks, learning from failure and learning through both books and real world problems. We have examples such as Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Michael Dell to name a few. They need to know that money is not the main aim for getting education.

Education, Innovation

The educational sector has a dearth in innovation these days due to many reasons. Learning is different from what it was 2- 3 decades ago. There needs to be educational reforms in order to improve the literacy rate and enhance the quality of the education system in America. However, some things need to be addressed and tackled before any progress happens due to them being obstacles in the path of education.

Parents

It is the job of the parents first to ensure that the children are receiving a good education from the school. If the child doesn’t do well in school, then ask them what could be the reason instead of just blaming it on laziness. There could be an undiagnosed learning disability. They should attend all the PTA’s and ask the teachers what strategies they use to teach their kids. This in turn will help them know what more needs to be done in order to make their children learn effectively. After all, they know their children more than anyone. Most parents are too occupied with their work to even care about such things and leave entirely everything on the school board.

School board

The school board always makes promises by talking about introducing innovative concepts in teaching and learning at their schools but back out when it is actually time to act out on it. Teachers don’t want to get out of their old teaching bubble by employing new strategies because they are new or uncomfortable to them. The result is the same old teaching methods to a generation of students that is so different to the ones they taught in the 90s.

Old and scripted curriculum

Although the concepts in the subjects are the same, but the approach to teaching them should be updated and renewed every few years. There should be special textbooks for students with learning disabilities like dyslexia and ADHD. Textbooks can be made in different formats to be more appealing to the students so that they grasp complex subjects easily. For e.g. there is a manga (Japanese style comics) textbook series that covers some of the basic subjects like math to complex ones such as quantum physics.

No room to grow

Classrooms should be a place of fostering the minds to grow both intellectually and artistically. Often students are kept in a virtual box by the teachers and are not encouraged to explore outside the bounds of a textbook and a rigid learning method. There should be project based learning where the students can learn by doing their own research and analysis.

Report card mentality

Report cards should not be the only yardstick to gauge the talents, skills and mental faculties of a student. Google encourages its employees to fail and knows that success only comes after learning from failing. Don’t make failing a sin for the students. Encourage them to value the learning process more than the end result which is just a letter on card.

Education, Innovation

Schools these days have started to slowly make the shift from traditional forms of education to the more modern and contemporary but there are still many school systems that are staying behind when it comes to introducing innovations in schools. So here are the most reasons why schools need innovative ideas:

Learning for everyone

Researches and studies over the years have discovered learning disabilities which were once considered to be something else. Children were that ADHD or dyslexia were thought of as “dumb, slow or lazy kids” who had no interest in studying. This thinking only further deterred those students into thinking that they were not good at studying. But now thanks to research there are special teaching methods and learning styles created to aid these students with learning disabilities and they can now study at the same level as their peers. Now even Children with Down’s syndrome can finish school.

Improvement in learning and teaching

People have experimented and created new learning styles and methods that help students to pick up concepts and information easily. There are schools which teach children life skills early on so that their transition to adult life is easier as opposed to the basic textbook method where all they did was read facts and figures.

Schools shouldn’t focus more on the regular grading system because everyone has a different learning level. The innovative schools teach children that it’s ok to fail so long as you learn something from it. They also teach children that even if they fail, how can they come up with a better or correct solution to the problem. This in turn increases their critical learning skills.

Career shift

Due to technological advancement much of the industrial sector has had a migration of jobs for people. There will be 7 million jobs that will be lost in the industrial sector because most of the work will be done by machines anyway. Children need to learning new and different things that will create a new job market for them and this will secure their future.

The good thing about it is there will be new jobs and categories created as well so they have to prepare themselves for the change. Many jobs that we see today won’t even exist in the next 5 years and will be replaced by technology and there will be new kinds of jobs springing up.

Staying in touch with latest trends

Schools need to keep up with the technology that is being introduced every day. There new devices, apps and machines that people are using every day. Innovations like the Smart board, tablets instead of books are just to name a few.

Easily accessible

Innovation is important in education because it needs to be accessible by everyone even if it’s in other countries. By doing so, everyone can get and share knowledge easily across the globe. Distance learning through the internet has created new opportunities for people to access education which wasn’t possible before. People can teach live online to students across other countries or students can access their lessons from home if they are unable to go to school.

Education, Innovation
Read on to know why innovative strategies in education can transform the shape of the entire sector.

Everything changes with time and so do the methods and strategies for teaching and learning. The education sector has far too long been employing the same old teaching methods for students. The generation today relies heavily on technology more than ever. Therefore, in order for them to be engaged easily towards education, using technological methods has become necessary. New research has discovered learning disabilities in children that were once unknown. Children with learning problems used to be labeled as dumb or lazy but now they have a name for it. Now solutions are popping up for everything. So why can’t we use some of those solutions for the education sector?

Here are some reasons why the education sector needs innovation desperately:

To keep up with the times

Times are changing fast so the schools need to be kept abreast of new and improved teaching methods that they can introduce to their students. This is the age of the internet and more specifically social media and so the schools need to incorporate education into the lives of the students through these mediums as well. This creates a learning environment even outside of the classroom. Using new tools and gadgets will create a spark of interest in the students.

Preparing the students for the real world

School does not on the whole, prepare the children for the world really well. Gone are the days of readin’, writin’ and rithmetic’ and it’s more about project based earning and case studies. Students need to be thrown into the real world problems in order for them to come up solutions themselves. The teachers just need to steer them in the right direction. Students need to be taught critical thinking skills in order to be the future leaders, entrepreneurs and artists of tomorrow.

Idea generation

By employing new thinking models in the classroom, teachers can instill in them a sense of idea generation. They should be encouraged to come with solutions to problems and new ideas rather than just be taught from a rigid curriculum. How will they come up with new ideas if they are stifled by rote learning and de-motivating teachers?

They are the future

What we sow into the minds of the students today will reap tomorrow so we should do our best to provide them with a quality education. Who knows they might be the future presidents, ministers and lawmakers that can influence our lives.

Instill creativity

It has been proven by research that children in Montessori are the brightest because their classroom is a place their imagination can run wild. They can play with objects, build, break, learn, draw and color etc. They tell stories and have a keen interest in the world. But by the time they are in high school, most of the spark has been blown out by the school system. Risk taking and failures are considered shameful, so much of their creativity dies along with them. Students need to be encouraged to be the future artists, designers and creative thinkers of tomorrow.

Innovation

For many people out there innovation and disruption are terms that are often confused. However, there is a difference between the two. The only problem is that the difference is a little hard to spot.

You may innovate but not necessarily disrupt something. However, when you disrupt something you are not only going to be innovative, but the innovation is going to seem so irrational, so away from the norms that eventually the whole industry will be disrupted.

Confused? Probably a better way to explain this is with the help of an example. Hotels.com is an online platform where you can look up different hotels and resorts, find out about their amenities and facilities, book yourself a room, check out the nearby locations etc. In its own time, when it first rolled out Hotels.com was seen as an innovative way of handling your accommodation needs when travelling.

It was definitely innovative, but did it disrupt anything? No!

What would seem like a disruptively innovative idea in the same industry? Several people put their heads together and thought that it would be a great idea if they could have an online marketplace where they could have people who want to rent out their homes to people who may be in need of an accommodation.

And this is how Airbnb was born! The idea of connecting the hosts and the travelers together was not only innovative but disruptive too!

When an individual is just being innovative they might be that way without necessarily having to dismantle the entire system. They can simple propose a new, more insightful problem solving strategy, one which the world has never seen before just like they did with Hotels.com. At the end of the day their strategy is also something completely original, but it has not created any disruption anywhere.

On the other hand when you talk about people who wish to disrupt markets, their idea does not only have to be innovative, it needs to be so ingenious that just on its innovativeness it creates chaos. Only then would they be able to create the disruption they intend to. It is clear by now that for a person to create disruption, they must possess the key of innovation in their hands.

Disruptive Innovators: A Force to be Reckoned With

When disruptors want to introduce a revolutionary solution, they think about introducing such a massive innovation which would disrupt their particular industry in such a manner that the old no longer remains in demand. The disruptive innovators become a force to be reckoned with on their own.

Another popular example of businesses that introduced disruptive innovation includes Facebook: the social media site which literally changed the game of how people previously interacted with each other.

It is clearly that if an industry wishes to survive, they must constantly innovate. This is the biggest competitive edge they have. But do businesses need to disrupt too? While this may certainly be food for thought, one thing is clear that you can neither be innovative or disruptive without being backed up by innovation.

Entrepreneurship, Innovation
Are you interested in learning about what it really means to be innovative? Read this post to find out.

The term “innovation” seems like it has found its way into everybody’s dictionaries. Recruiters seem to use this term the most when they say they are looking to build a workforce that has the “innovative spirit”.

But what is exactly the innovative spirit?

The Common Concept of Innovation:

For most people the term “innovation” means something new, something different. To do something innovative would mean to come up with something which is one of a kind. This concept of innovation is absolutely 100% correct.

It only starts to go a little towards the downhill slope when people assume that to “do something different” they will have to rely on technology only. This is on partly correct. While there is no denying that technology can help you immensely in carrying your innovative spirit forward, it is not entirely true.

In a way, the only actual thing you need to have in order to be innovative and set your mark is: ideas.

And here’s the really cool thing about ideas: you neither need technology for them, nor money! Literally anything under the sun from the external environment and sometimes, even internal, can inspire you. That inspiration is what is going to lead you to think of an innovative idea.

Irrespective of how clichéd this sounds, ideas truly can change the world. This is because of the innovative quality in them. You can look at any great invention and understand exactly how a truly innovative thing can change the entire game. Before we had airplanes, nobody could even fathom flying in the sky, yet here we are today being in one place today, and in the second one a few hours later.

And if you think that you have to come up with something extraordinarily special to revolutionize things around you, then you are mistaken again! Sometimes, innovative ideas can actually be so simple that they leave people wondering why it had not occurred to them!

Experts recommend focusing on what’s really bothering you in the moment and taking things from there. Focusing on what is that one thing you wish to change can help you get your thoughts together. Once you have identified some sort of a ground to build on, metaphorically a lane that you want to drive your innovative car in, anything and anybody around you and your environment can work as a source of inspiration.

Getting an innovative idea is the easy part. The difficult part is turning that innovative idea into a great reality. For this, you might definitely have to resort to technology, but do you need it to come up with an innovative idea in the first place? Definitely not!

They say that ideas are abundant, but the drive isn’t. Meaning to say that you might come up with an innovative idea a little too often, but the willingness to see it through is where most people fall short. At the end of the day, what you actually do with and about your innovative idea is what matters.

Innovation
Are you looking for ways to be innovative? Read this post to find out how having that one thing in your arsenal can help you be more innovative.

You must have heard so many people (sometimes even companies) complain how they struggle with being innovative. No matter how hard they try, it seems like the bulb of innovation won’t even flicker over their heads.

In reality, such individuals or firms are not exactly struggling with innovation, they are actually struggling with obtaining perspectives! Contrary to the popular belief innovation does not require money; it requires a fresh perspective only, an incredible, new, insight of sorts which encourages them to come up with something extraordinary.

And this is something that a lot of people struggle with, so if you also find yourself in this group please know that you are not alone! Having said that, let’s talk about how you can overcome this block in perspectives and open your channels of innovation.

Adopt Collaboration as Your Middle Name:

Often what happens is that when we are trying so very hard to come up with an innovative solution we end up restricting our views. We tend to look at that problem through one lens only. Sometimes we become aware of this and we consciously tell ourselves to broaden and vision and try looking at the problem by stepping into someone else’s shoes.

This can work, but even by stepping into someone else’s shoes and then looking at things your perspective will not be as similar to the person who actually owns the shoes. So why not spend time with them and get their two cents about the problem?

In other words, why not collaborate with other positive great minds and see what they have to contribute? More often than not you will be pleasantly surprised with just how differently everyone looks at the same problem.

Let the “Can’t Do This” Attitude Go:

Another reason why sometimes it becomes difficult for us to gain a fresh perspective is because of the mental limitations we exert on ourselves or our situations. Even before actually thinking about the idea, we cancel it by telling ourselves that “we won’t be able to do this so why waste time even thinking about this”.

What is the harm with entertaining an idea? This is one of the silliest things people do by which they end up blocking their own innovative path. Remember, where there is a will, there is a way.

Never Stop Revisiting:

Another way of gaining a fresh perspective is to not stay stuck up on something, but rather when you feel that you are not able to come up with anything innovative presently, keep it aside and come back to it later.

Most people confess that they find pretty innovative and simple solutions to the problems that seemed impossible to solve previously. This is because sometimes our minds get stuck in a particular frame through which it keeps on viewing the problems so even if the answer is right in front of us we are unable to see it because it does not fit that particular frame in which our mind is in at that moment.

Innovation
Coming up with something revolutionary does not always mean going crazy with the resources. Read this post to find out the smart way of being innovative.

It is quite obvious that in today’s time and age if you are not innovative enough you will definitely be left behind. In order to sustain your clientele, your image, your company’s growth and progress, you must have the ability to come up with innovative ideas and solutions.

When we talk about being innovative, what we really mean is that we have to figure out a way of doing something which is one of its kind. Several companies tend to shy away from trying out something which has never been done before because the fear of risking it all for nothing is too big. Nobody wants to invest millions into rolling out an idea which brings you zero profit.

So, can companies be innovative without having to necessarily spend millions on trial projects?

Yes, they can!

Shifting the Focus:

When we talk about a company’s assets, we do not always mean its monetary assets.

In terms of being innovative, the biggest asset any company has is its pool of talented employees! Instead of investing large sums of money into projects you are not even sure how they would turn out, a better idea would be to shift the focus from there to training the promising employees.

There are so many companies out there that can help train the employees of any organization and get them to think more creatively, more innovatively. So why not invest some money there, get your employees on the right track so they can generate innovative, creative ideas? The generated ideas can then be turned into something of value.

Think of it like innovation through education.

You can make the process even more cost-effective by selecting the right employees who already have a good set of skills and experience to boot in the first place. Hire smart people from the very beginning. They would not even need that much training and still be able to come up with innovative strategies.

Companies can make innovation a budget friendly process by training their pool of talented employees accordingly. Special attention should be given to selecting the right kind of workshops and seminars which would prove to be the most beneficial for the employees attending them.

Since there is so much development that is happening in almost every field today, these training programs should be made somewhat of a regular component of the company’s activities. This way whatever recent trends, developments etc. are happening, the information regarding them can be provided to the employees in question, in a timely manner.

It is important that whatever knowledge is being imparted through these training workshops, courses and seminar should be maintained. Organizations should see to it that they give equal opportunities to employees to provide their best, creative strategies of solving problems. They never know just which idea might just end up being their best, most profitable one.

Business, Innovation

So technology has evolved so much in the last century but in the last decade or so there has been a rapid increase in innovative technology that many industries either had to completely change their business model or had to go out of business eliminating an entire industry. The sign of entering of a new era is that when an industry either disappears or has changed into something new and better. Here are just some of the industries that went away due to innovations:

  1. Photograph industry

With the emergence of the digital age, came the digital cameras and photography. Companies like Kodak and Polaroid were no longer enjoying profits like they once used and Kodak actually had to file for bankruptcy. Polaroid was a popular brand for introducing instant photographs, but with digital photographs you could see photos instantly as well but with a better twist: you could delete the ones that didn’t come out right and can only get the ones developed that you liked and this was something Polaroid could never do. So the old ways of photography were chucked out the window as special photography softwares also came along. The traditional photography isn’t completely gone yet as there are many old school photographers still working in the red room but commercially, there has been a huge migration towards the digital side. People prefer to keep DSLRs now rather than a Polaroid or film reel camera.

  1. Video cassette & VCR’s

Video cassettes have been totally replaced by CDs and VCRs have been replaced by DVD players. And in many cases there has been a shift of going completely digital because people are switching from buying CDs to watching movies online. Companies like Blockbuster had to file for bankruptcy too because they didn’t change with the times. People started to download movies and purchase them online and new companies like Netflix offered its users to watch TV shows and movies online without even having to go to a store, so ultimately the video rental and cassette industry ended. Everything has gone digital, people make videos through their mobile phones and can easily upload them or burn them on CDs.

  1. Audio cassettes & CDs

Audio cassettes were already on the way out when CDs became popular. But nowadays even audio CD’s are getting less noticed as digital music is being preferred. The use of mp3 players like iPods and smart phones where you can easily download music is the trend now. Nobody uses CD players to listen to music anymore.

  1. Books

They haven’t become obsolete and many people have debated and argued that they will never completely be out of fashion but with the invention of reading tablets like iPads and Nook more and more people have started to download e-books. It saves people space and they have the added advantage of carrying around their entire library in a thin device that they can read anytime and anywhere, even in the dark. The publishing is also taking a huge shift towards the digital side.

Find out how technology has evolved in the last few years.

The thing about technology is that if you can’t grow with it, you will soon lag behind in a world that is fast paced. Its really important to keep up with the times but the key is to do it one step at a time. We need to grow and evolve in a step by step manner. Evolution and growth don’t happen overnight. It is an ongoing process of wear and tear, creation and destruction and reinvention.

In about 30 years the use of solar panels will be so common that most of the world’s energy be through solar power but if everyone all of a sudden started using solar panels tomorrow, then the oil and gas industries will go bankrupt and out of business, people will lose their jobs and it will result in huge economic chaos. So technological advancements are being made little by little and are being incorporated in the lives of people at a micro level every day.

However, here are just some of the new technologies that have emerged and will probably be common in the next couple of decades.

Brain implant

This is relatively a very new thing and something people were not expecting. Sure, we have all seen other organs being transplanted but when it comes to the brain; everything changes to a whole new level. But there have been successful experiments through trial and error being done on lab animals that suggest that brain implants are not that far from the future. A microchip will be implanted in a person’s brain that will read the brains’ signals and thought processes and make a person move. It will help people suffering from paralysis and other brain related damage like nerve or speech problems be recovered. This technology is expected to be common after 10-15 years.

Self Driving Trucks

There have been many truck driving accidents on highways and people usually lose their lives. Usually the drivers are sleepy, or at times drunk, and this becomes really dangerous. People have developed a new way to combat this situation: self driving trucks that can sense a vehicle for miles and calculate how to drive and when to take a turn or break. This technology will be common in about a decade or so. Right now it’s in the testing phase.

Accessing things through face/eyes

This is becoming quite a common thing now and it’s available across certain countries already. UAE for instance has an eye recognition immigration, where a person just has to look at the machine and it scans the retina. ATM’s use facial recognition technology to keep track of the person who is taking money. This helps in tracking criminals a well and updating the data.

 360 degree pictures and videos

No more one angular photos, but now a person can take 360 photos and videos can be watched in the same way as well. This technology is being used by retailers and real estate agents so that people can have a better view and look at things before they come over for a real time view.

Education, Innovation

New research has confirmed that the old ways of teaching and learning will soon be chucked out the window because new ways of teaching students have been developed. A couple of decades ago there was no way for learning disabilities like ADHD and Dyslexia and kids that had these, were thought of as dumb or lazy. But now scientists and psychologists have also developed ways for these students to learn better and be at the same level as their peers. Thanks to technology, students can’t lag behind anymore and the old school ways are decreased.

Career centric

If technology is used correctly then kids and teens have better chances of choosing the career of their choices and some guidance counsellor who thinks going the run of the mill path is the sure fire way to go. By using smart phones, tablets and apps can make them sharper and see what interests them on a broader scale. No longer will they be dependent on what others decide for them when it comes to their careers. A lot of people who have taken the traditional path of education are often seen quitting their jobs and switching their careers or fields.

Boosts creativity and innovative skills

Technology definitely helps in boosting creativity in children. Watching videos on YouTube, graphic designing classes, using tools that create art, film, sound etc all help kids come up with something new every time. If you think about it, all the big innovators in technology were students when they developed life changing things. The owner of Dell (Michael Dell) was still in college when he created Dell computers, Zuckerberg was in College when he created Facebook and the list goes on.

Prepares them for the real world

Technology helps in kids develop critical thinking skills as opposed to just boring textbook learning in the classroom. Teachers are creating new syllabi that incorporate more use of technology like using iPads, iPods and laptops. High school students are becoming entrepreneurs and are encouraged to come up with solutions to real world problems like wars, carbon emissions, and economics.

Learning faster through visual aids

A picture is definitely worth a thousand words as proven by science now because it is concluded that humans are visual creatures and they remember things more clearly with the help of pictures and images. The brain processes facts faster if they are shown as opposed to heaps of written or printed text. So using videos in lessons and taking them to educational trips creates long term learning. This is not to say that we must completely remove books because things to be explained articulately will always be required in textual format; it’s simply to use visual aids more. This will help students who dyslexic or have ADHD will also not feel left out or attend special classes.

Read this post to find out how starting small does not mean you always have to stay small. Learn how innovation can help you accomplish things.

When it comes to taking risks, startups are at a distinctive advantage. It is easier for them to make decisions that may or may not work out in their favor since they do not have much at stake. From the workforce to the resources at hand, everything is already pretty small so incase, if their innovative decision does not do well for them, the aftermath can be easier to handle.

Big, established companies are more reluctant in letting the innovative spirit flourish because if it backfires they will have to suffer a much greater loss than a company that’s just beginning. However, having said that, there are still several established companies that encourage innovation. These are usually the kind of companies that started their own journey on the wings of innovation. If it were not for their willingness to initiate something new, they would not be there where they are today.

Everybody begins somewhere and for some that “somewhere” is usually “nothing.” If you look around you will find only a hundred or more different examples of companies that are business giants today but things were not always this rosy for them. What’s even more is how these companies never get comfortable; even after reaching a certain point they keep on striving for more.

And innovation is usually the middle name of that struggle.

To help demonstrate this point, let’s talk about it with the help of an example.

Nike: The Greek Goddess of Victory

Nike is a brand that needs no introduction. From their shoes to their accessories, clothes, their advertisements and everything else in between speaks for what the brand really is. It all began when founder Philip H. Knight came across a Japanese athletic shoemaker, Onitsuka Tiger, on his trip to Japan. He agreed to import his shoes to the US and there was no looking back.

From money to space, everything Philip Knight had was limited. He would often use his father’s basement to store the inventory. After working with Tiger for some years, Knight partnered with Bill Bowerman who was also his former track coach.

They decided to launch their own footwear under the name of Nike, which is actually the name of the Greek goddess of victory and there has been no looking back ever since. Other than delivering quality products to their audience, one of the main reasons why Nike is so ahead of their competitors is because of their innovative spirit.

Every now and then Nike launches a product in the market which makes use of never seen/heard before technology which leaves everyone baffled and impressed. A relatively recent example of this is their line of footwear with “flyknit technology”. When we hear the term athletic shoes, it’s obvious that they must help the athletes do what they do best, but who has ever heard of footwear that’s also environment friendly? Nike’s flyknit technology claims to produce 60% less waste as the other cut-and-sew methods.

According to a report, their flyknit technology has reduced up to 3.5 million pounds of waste material since 2012.

Talk about being innovative with a purpose!

Read on to know how giving teachers the right tools to teach can bring huge changes in the education sector.

Times have changed a lot especially really fast in the last decade or so where technology has changed various sectors of the world. The education sector has also been impacted. Gone are the days when teachers used to make the students do rote memorization, reading through lots of texts that not only bored them but also lessened their deter them from studying. Nowadays, thanks to innovative technological advances, teachers are using new methods to teach their kids. Information and knowledge is easy to access and share more than ever so there really is no excuse for someone not getting a good education (at least not in the developed world).

Here are just some of the ways the teachers are using new tools to teach their students:

Smart board

We thought that using white board was cool thing back in the day when they were first introduced to replace the traditional chalk board but now the board has evolved into a smart board which is an innovative technology incorporating the touch screen capabilities on a computer screen that is projected to the classroom. Teachers can now use their computers and also write over them through the use of a special touch pen. There is no need to use chalk or pen and no issue of cleanups.

Cloud Technology

Now the students who have missed their lessons due to any reasons have no excuse to not do their homework or assignments because whatever the teacher taught in the class can be stored or backed up by cloud technology and it can be accessed by the students with the permission of the teacher. It can include videos, audio, PDFs that they can print out etc.

MOOCs

It is short for Massive Open Online Course and it is a very useful and important platform for people all over the world to access and learn subjects through this innovative way of distance learning. Professors and teachers from different universities collaborate and create subjects that people can study. They get assignments and tests in which they are graded on and at the end of the term they can even get certifications for passing the subject. The students can then put these certifications on their resumes as well.

Apps

Apps for learning and education are also drastically changing the way people learn new things. There are apps for language learning, for math, history and other subjects who anyone wants to delve into. Some are free while others have to be purchased. The best part about them is that they are for mobiles so the students can access them whenever they are on the move.

Podcasts

Teachers can create audio lectures for their students and upload them as podcast that the students can listen to their iPods or other mp3 players. Nowadays, who doesn’t have an mp3 player? And for those who don’t, can listen to them on their smart phones. Podcasts are also an easy way to listen to lectures on the go and it also saves the students’ time.

Everything is a lot easier to accomplish when you have the right mindset for it. In fact, having the proper mindset for the upcoming challenge is almost essential if you plan on conquering it or emerging victorious on the other end.

Likewise, for being innovative there exists a proper mindset too. There is more than one component that makes up this innovative mindset so let’s have a look at them.

1: Curiosity:

Without a doubt the first component of the innovative mindset is curiosity. Only a problem which you are curious about would compel you to come up with an innovative solution to it. Hence, don’t forget to keep that inner kid alive and never stop questioning!

2: Daydreaming:

If you feel like reprimanding yourself for wasting too much time just thinking about doing something innovative, don’t beat yourself up about it because you are on the right track! The more you daydream, or as we like to call it, “visualize” the innovative solution, the more it becomes likely that that flash of insight might strike you.

And before you know it, you have yourself an innovative idea to work with!

3: Learn as Much as You Can:

When we talk about learning we don’t always mean sitting in a classroom being schooled by an instructor. Learning is both formal and informal. From books, to people and abstract concepts like time can all teach you lots of things.

Try to retain as much as information as you can. And if you have trouble doing that you can always maintain a journal of sorts where you can make notes to note down all the important life lessons life has taught you. You never know when you might have to pull one lesson out and use it as a basis for your innovative solution.

4: Observe:

This is a continuation of the 3rd point. Learning can also be observational. An innovative mindset thrives on naturalistic observations. By paying attention to how people act in their natural habitats can also help stimulate the innovative spirit inside you.

5: Exist in the Present:

This one is particularly difficult especially in the times we exist. For thinking innovatively we must think by connecting our minds only to the problem at hand and nothing else. We all are guilty of sipping our morning coffee while scrolling through our social media accounts to say “updated”.

Learn the art of detachment and use it to detach yourself from everything that can potentially distract you from the problem you wish to innovatively solve.

6: Don’t be Afraid of Taking the Road Less Traveled:

The road less traveled, the extra mile or whatever you want to call it is never crowded.

Nobody wants to go there because it seems like too much work. And this is why you should definitely go there because there is a chance that that innovative solution you are looking for is lying somewhere there…

Technology has advanced rapidly, but education management seems to have fallen behind. Innovation should be brought in for effective learning

They so rightly say that today’s students are the leaders of the future. What this means is that they must be educated effectively.

Technology has advanced significantly today, but unfortunately education is unable to keep up at the same pace. Innovation in education management is absolutely vital so that the methodologies and effectiveness of teaching can be improved.

Education management needs new ideas and strategies, which must be scalable so that they can be used for serving millions of people, including both students and teachers. Plus, they should be able to reach out to students and teachers at all levels.

So how can innovation in education be achieved? Here are some ideas that might work.

Focus on visual techniques

Teachers should ensure that they are not presenting disconnected facts to students. Instead, they should organize all the concepts and details, and explain them out through visual means. What’s the benefit? Knowledge is transferred in a much effective manner that allows students to understand it better and retain it for longer periods of time.

Classroom technology plays its part

If advanced technology is used in education, students’ learning will be enhanced, and the overall experience will be better for them as well as the teachers. Tablets, cameras, computers and even GPS devices play a notable role. Video games can be used for teaching math and languages. Skype and video conferencing can be used for setting up sessions with guest speakers around the world in an attempt to coach students and even teachers.

While extremely advantageous, the usage of electronic devices should be properly monitored as well.

Active learning is an effective form

Active learning includes methodologies such as peer instructions, problem solving and discussion groups. The benefits of this are that students get to think and share information with others as well.

An ideal lesson can be one in which teachers provide a quick overview of the topic, and then present a challenge for the students. The challenge can be in the form of a QA session, puzzles or some other activity. Depending on the complexity and time, students should either be solving the challenge individually or in groups. Once the class ends, each group can quickly go over their learnings.

45 to 60 minutes may not be enough

Traditionally every lesson is around 45 to 60 minutes. However, certain concepts need to be presented for longer periods. Thus, efforts should be made to shift schools from the concept of rigid lessons. In today’s error, education should not be limited to time or even a classroom. As per the needs, it should be long or short, and on or beyond the institution premises.

Learning should be more personalized

Everyone in the classroom does not learn at the same pace and faces different challenges. Educators should focus on the individual needs of every student, and try to address then. Generally, every student in the room is taught in the same way, but new methodologies should make an attempt to break away from this. Digital technologies and project based learning can help change this to a certain extent. If this is paired with frequent and affective assessments, teachers can gauge everyone’s progress.

Having the spirit of innovation definitely has its perks, but is there something even better than being innovative? Read this post to find out.

Time and again we have heard several business analysts conclude that if a business is not innovative enough they are likely to be left behind. And why they would conclude that makes sense too. If a business is not putting innovative, insightful ideas on the table then what are their chances of surviving the competition they are likely to face in their market?

We have several examples of companies who were slow in the pursuit of being more innovative and ended up being put out of business altogether.

Business experts believe that even if these companies found it difficult to be innovative, they could have just worked on their problem areas instead. This observation then lead many strategists and analysts to admit that identifying problem areas in a business is just as important, perhaps even more, as it is to be innovative.

Thinking Innovative Ideas or Solving Problems: What’s Easier?

Even people who are naturally very innovative in their thoughts and actions will agree that sometimes thinking along the lines which have never been previously used can be difficult. After all being innovative means to come up with something that the world has not seen or thought about before.

Does this then mean that solving problems is easier than coming up with innovative ideas?

To some extent, yes.

For starters, any problem that a business might be facing in whatever department can always be broken down into smaller chunks and then worked on. Eventually, as you get through one chunk of a problem after another you realize that you have solved most of the problem.

So if you are a company whose workforce finds it difficult to come up with innovative ideas you do not have to beat yourself (or them) up for this reason. Instead, what you can do is to have a thorough analysis of your business’ growth in the past recent years and outline the potential factors which hindered the growth.

A problem area does not necessarily have to be an area where you are doing bad, it could be any area where you think you can do better. As a business owner, one of your major goals is to not only remain in business but expand as well. There is no one size fit all strategy that would work for every business out there. Some businesses might achieve this growth by pitching one innovative idea after another. Other businesses can steal the spotlight by working on their weaknesses and emerging stronger than before.

What is even better is that the extensive amount of help you have today that is willing to assist you with your problems. If you do come across problem areas that could use work, get in touch with the right agencies and specialists.
